Designwest Crafts the 2024 Annual Report for Irish Seed Savers

Annual Report Design Ireland How Designwest Crafted the 2024 Annual Report for Irish Seed Savers

Every year we get to work with organisations that genuinely make Ireland better. Few embody that more fully than Irish Seed Savers, one of our longest-standing and most loyal clients. Based in Scariff, Co. Clare and serving all of Ireland and beyond, the team at Irish Seed Savers plays an extraordinary role in conserving Ireland’s food crop heritage.

For their 2024 Annual Report, they needed a publication that didn’t just present figures and updates, but captured the character, mission and soul of their work. This wasn’t just a design project. It was a chance to bring to life themes of biodiversity, heritage, sustainability, community and impact — all through the lens of professional annual report design in Ireland.

What follows is the story behind the project: the brief, the creative decisions and the final outcome.

A Report Rooted in Heritage: The Brief

Irish Seed Savers wanted their annual report to feel grounded in the earth — literally and visually. Their 2024 work spanned conservation, education, community engagement, and Ireland-wide biodiversity initiatives.

The brief asked for a publication that would:

  • Reflect the warm, organic character of the organisation
  • Communicate national impact with clarity
  • Honour their 30+ years of heritage
  • Showcase their 20-acre farm and living collections
  • Be accessible to supporters, funders and policymakers
  • Carry forward the natural, earthy design style we’ve built with them over many years

The design needed to resonate with their supporter base, which includes growers, academics, orchardists, conservationists and community groups across the country.

And because Irish Seed Savers is based in Clare, the project also strengthens Designwest’s position as leading specialists in annual report design Clare while still reaching national audiences.

Annual Report Design Ireland How Designwest Crafted the 2024 Annual Report for Irish Seed Savers

Visual Direction: Natural, Honest, Warm

The cover immediately sets the tone: a textured, parchment-like background, paired with sepia-toned botanical illustrations and earthy greens and browns (Page 1).

This natural look is something we’ve developed with their brand over multiple years — grounded, human, and unmistakably Irish Seed Savers. The imagery evokes heritage, soil, seed, land and memory.

Inside, the report opens with a full-page macro photograph of seed pods (Page 2), setting a rhythm between photography and illustration that runs throughout the publication.

The tone is organic but not rustic — modern but not clinical. Everything is built to feel alive.

Storytelling at the Core: Foreword & Origins

The Chairperson’s Foreword (Page 3) introduces the year with warmth, stability and strategic clarity, and the layout gives her words room to breathe with soft green tones and a textured background.

Page 5 presents the organisation’s history in a narrative spread titled How It All Began, featuring archival photography and a story tracing the organisation back to 1991 in Co. Carlow and its pivotal move to Scariff in 1996.

Designwest ensured the layout reinforced nostalgia without losing accessibility — a visual retelling built around community, heritage and care.

Strategy 2030: Visualising the Future

The Strategy 2030 spread (Page 6) uses vibrant greens and a full-page cabbage photograph, grounding the strategy in the visual language of living crops.

The four core domains — Conservation, Protection, Utilisation and Education — appear across Pages 7 to 10, each matched with carefully chosen photography, circular imagery, earthy tones and soft organic shapes.

Every page has its own rhythm:

  • Conservation: Apples and peas symbolising living biodiversity (Page 7).
  • Protection: A human figure working in polytunnels, reinforcing care and stewardship (Page 8).
  • Utilisation: Seeds, harvests, and hands at work (Page 9).
  • Education: Community learning moments and orchard engagement (Page 10).

These spreads required a sensitive treatment of text hierarchy, iconography and photography — blending structure with story.

Impact 2024: Designing Clarity From Complexity

Page 12 opens the Impact 2024 section with a bright, green-filled polytunnel photograph and a bold headline treatment.

Pages 13 to 18 then translate significant achievements into clean, digestible layouts:

Expanding Ireland’s Orchard Heritage (Page 13)

  • Supplying almost 4,000 apple trees for heritage orchards
  • Planting projects with Clare County Council and parishes
  • 350 mini-orchards via The Hare’s Corner
  • A total of 5,960 heritage apple trees delivered nationally

Promoting Conservation Through Use (Page 13)

  • Over 20,000 packets of Irish heritage vegetable seeds sold
  • Over 5,500 packets of Irish native wildflower seeds distributed
  • Supporting biodiversity and halting extinction risks

Biodiversity Education & Community Engagement (Page 14)

Including national guide creation and Ireland’s largest-ever Community Seed Share.

National & International Recognition (Page 15)

Media features, awards, and a special apple tree planted at Áras an Uachtaráin.

Infographics & Statistics (Page 16–17)

Including:

  • 25,879 seed packs
  • 2,851 visitors
  • 21 workshops
  • 1500+ supporters
  • Social media reach: 17.3k on Instagram, 25.4k on Facebook, etc.

These pages required careful design balancing bright illustrations, icons, numbers and generous whitespace.

Ireland-wide Map of Distribution (Page 18)

One of the most visually striking pages — a full map of Ireland mapped with delivery points and a prominent statistic: 5960 trees delivered to all 32 counties.

This reinforces national impact and ties directly to your SEO goal of ranking for annual report design Ireland.

Page 19–20: Governance, Support & Closing Pages

The final pages highlight:

  • The board
  • Staff appointments
  • Auditors
  • Registered details
  • Principal bankers
  • Supporters and funders
  • The organisation’s Clare headquarters (Scariff, V94 V6W0)

These pages needed clarity, legibility and organisational confidence.

We used structured typography and accessible spacing to maintain professionalism at the end of a very human report.

The Design Process: How Designwest Approaches Annual Report Design in Ireland

Designing a document like this is not about making something “pretty.” It is about:

  • honouring a client’s mission
  • showing the real people behind the work
  • respecting the visual heritage of seeds, soil, orchards and stories
  • turning complex data into coherent visual communication
  • balancing emotion and structure
  • reflecting cultural, environmental and national context

For Irish Seed Savers, that meant going deep into their ethos — heritage, biodiversity, protection and community — and letting those themes shape every page.

Outcome: A Publication That Lives and Breathes Its Mission

The final report is more than a financial and governance document. It is:

  • A story of Ireland’s food crop heritage
  • A visual celebration of biodiversity
  • A national map of impact
  • A warm, grounded, human document
  • A tool for funders, supporters and policymakers
  • A reflection of the organisation’s roots in Co. Clare and impact across Ireland

For Designwest, the project strengthens our standing among annual report designers in Ireland, particularly those working with nonprofits, environmental organisations, heritage projects and purpose-driven initiatives.

FAQs

How long does annual report design take?
Most annual reports take between 3–6 weeks depending on content volume, imagery, narrative development and the number of design spreads needed. Irish Seed Savers’ report required careful storytelling and multiple visual layers, making thoughtful pacing essential.

Do Designwest design annual reports for organisations outside Clare?
Absolutely. While we work closely with Clare-based organisations, we design annual reports for nonprofits, charities, enterprises and public bodies across Ireland.

We can source imagery, direct photography, or work with client-supplied content, as we did for Seed Savers.
