Introduction
At Designwest, we know that a well-designed annual report is more than a compliance document — it’s a tool to communicate, inspire, and strengthen trust. One of our proudest recent projects was the CARO Annual Report 2024, which we graphically designed and typeset on behalf of Mayo County Council for the Climate Action Regional Offices (CARO).
This 80+ page publication documents the progress of Ireland’s CAROs in driving climate action across 31 local authorities. Our role was to transform a complex, data-heavy report into a clear, engaging, and visually compelling document that works in both digital and printed formats.
Understanding the Annual Report Design Brief
CARO’s mission is to coordinate and support Irish local government in achieving climate goals, including:
- A 51% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
- Climate neutrality by 2050.
The 2024 Annual Report needed to:
- Showcase major achievements such as the adoption of 31 Climate Action Plans, establishment of 41 Decarbonising Zones, and delivery of over 4,100 training places.
- Document progress in adaptation, mitigation, and public engagement.
- Highlight case studies of real-world climate projects across Ireland.
The challenge was balancing technical data with storytelling — making the report engaging for policymakers, councillors, and community members alike.
Our Design Process
1. Establishing a Visual Identity
We created a consistent design language for the report using:
- Colour coding to separate themes such as adaptation, mitigation, governance, and training.
- Professional typography to ensure clarity and legibility.
- Infographics and icons to make statistics instantly understandable.
2. Showcasing Case Studies
Seventeen case studies were included, covering projects such as:
- Beaches & Dunes Adaptation in Wexford.
- Local Authority fleet decarbonisation.
- Community energy initiatives in Clare and Galway.
Each was presented with photographs, structured summaries, and bold call-outs, giving equal weight to both narrative and visual impact.
3. Data Visualisation
From 3,919 actions across Climate Action Plans to 530,000 people living in Decarbonising Zones, data was a central part of this report. We designed dashboards, charts, and icon-led graphics to communicate these numbers effectively.
4. Typesetting & Accessibility
Given the report’s scale, typesetting was crucial. We structured content for easy scanning, while ensuring the PDF version met accessibility considerations. Print layouts were optimised for professional production.
5. Collaboration & Delivery
This was a highly collaborative project with Mayo County Council and CARO representatives. Our workflow included:
- Mock-ups for approval.
- Iterative revisions with feedback loops.
- Final delivery of both print-ready files and digital-optimised PDFs.
The Outcome
The finished CARO Annual Report 2024 is a professional, easy-to-navigate, and visually rich publication that:
- Gives stakeholders confidence in Ireland’s climate progress.
- Provides policymakers and funders with accessible data.
- Showcases local authority and community-led projects in a visually engaging way.
Feedback from CARO has been overwhelmingly positive, with the design praised for balancing technical accuracy with creativity and clarity.
