Fresh New Website for Ballyhaunis Community School
Some projects feel like catching up with an old friend. We’ve just re-developed the Ballyhaunis Community School website for the second time, partnering again with Patrick and the team to deliver a modern, fast, and easy-to-manage WordPress site that genuinely serves a busy Irish secondary/community school. This rebuild reflects how people actually use school websites today—quick updates, clear calendars, and mobile-first access for parents on the go.
What the school needed (and what we built)
As experienced WordPress website designers in Mayo, Ireland, we focused on the real, everyday jobs a school website must do—without fuss:
- News & Alerts for urgent updates (closures, exam info, events)
- Events & Calendars with clear filtering + “add to Google/iCal”
- Admissions & Enrolment hub with annual dates, notices and simple forms
- Policies Library: searchable, structured PDFs (AUP, Anti-Bullying, Child Safeguarding, etc.)
- Subjects & Departments: Junior/Senior Cycle, TY, extracurricular
- Wellbeing & SEN areas for Guidance/Counselling and student supports
- Galleries optimised for speed and mobile viewing
- Careers & Vacancies with simple downloads/apply steps
- Parent Hub with book lists, uniform info, app links and payments
- Contact & Location built for phones (maps, office hours, one-tap call)
Behind the scenes, the site runs on a lightweight custom theme (no bloat), Gutenberg block editor for super-simple editing, sensible custom post types (News, Events, Policies), and a tidy nav so staff can update content in minutes.
Hosting, speed & security: built like a tank
This site carries a large media library (historic galleries, PDFs and documents). We arranged bulletproof, faster and more secure hosting to suit the size and growth:
- High-performance WordPress stack (server-side caching, HTTP/2/3, PHP 8+)
- Scalable storage for big media archives, with room to grow
- Global CDN for snappy mobile loads across Ireland
- Web Application Firewall (WAF), malware scanning and hardened configs
- Auto-SSL, daily off-site backups, uptime monitoring and rapid rollback
- Smart image compression & lazy loading to keep Core Web Vitals happy
Result: a site that’s quick, reliable and secure, even at peak traffic—exactly what parents, students and staff need.
Built for real life: accessible, SEO-ready, future-proof
- Mobile-first UX with clear typography and hierarchy
- Accessibility-minded patterns (logical headings, alt-text prompts, strong colour contrast)
- SEO foundations (clean URLs, meta control, schema where relevant)
- Performance by design (caching, CDN, compressed media)
- Training & handover so staff can confidently keep the site fresh
We’ve designed and developed many school websites across the region (Mayo, Galway, Roscommon and beyond), so all those small “after-launch” asks—homepage quick links, easy PDF swaps, teacher-friendly editing—are already baked in.
Why this re-development matters
Ballyhaunis Community School already trusted us once. Coming back to Designwest for a second full rebuild says a lot about longevity, support and fit. The new site reflects today’s needs, tomorrow’s growth, and a platform the school team can run with—confidently.
